Lying awake at 3am: a kinder script for the racing mind
3am thoughts are not facts. They are unfinished sentences from earlier in the day, looking for somewhere to land.
If you wake up at the same hour, two or three nights a week, you’re not failing at sleep. Your body is doing something specific, and there’s a way to meet it that doesn’t involve fighting it.
A small ritual
Keep a notebook by the bed. When you wake, don’t reach for the phone. Write down — in three lines or fewer — whatever the mind is chewing on. Then close the book and tell yourself, kindly: I’ll think about that tomorrow.
You can’t out-think 3am. You can only show it where the unfinished thing lives, and ask it to come back at 9.
This won’t fix it the first night. But over a few weeks, the body learns that the worry has a destination. It can rest.
If something here landed, I’d be glad to hear from you.
You don’t need to know what to say. You just need a place to start.
